Uttam started his career in 1982 with a confectionery company in Fiji, where he kept a fleet of 16 vehicles operating, from services to mechanical and body repairs, including Ford, Holden and Toyota. Uttam moved onto rally and sport vehicles including Minis and Ford Escorts for the next several years.
Uttam worked on the Toyota assembly line in Fiji for tractors and machinery whilst working part time for Hyundai Motors Fiji before opening his workshop Vikash Motors in Fiji.
When Uttam moved to Christchurch in 2000 he joined DesignLine Bus Company assembling their heavy vehicles and coaches as well as heading the country-wide breakdown service.
